Historic Preservation Awards
The foundation of the Trust comes directly from our resident’s focus on historic preservation The historic area of Sanford was in desperate need of restoration in the 80s, and it was the residents who banded together to stop the efforts of investors and developers who were demolishing historic structures throughout the city. These early urban pioneers formed the Sanford Historic Trust in 1988. Partly because of those efforts, Sanford was added to the National Registry of Historic places in 1989.
The Trust began recognizing the efforts of homeowners who were dedicated to restoring neglected properties by bestowing Preservation Awards in 1993. Since that time the Trust has given over 75 awards to homes and commercial buildings in Sanford.
In addition to honoring historic preservation, the awards also help us build a better community by fostering communications between neighbors and facilitating pride in our city. While we seek to honor the standards of purist preservation, we also seek to recognize the do-ers; the people of this community who put their hearts, minds, money and sweat into restoring and preserving these beautiful historic structures.
To those who have been nominated and the award winners, the Trust would like to thank you for your participation and contributions to the city.
